The Nigerian Navy has refuted reports alleging that a 12-year-old student of Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Kuje, in Abuja, was detained by naval personnel over comments made by her mother on the school’s PTA WhatsApp platform.
Okay News reports that the claims had sparked public outrage after circulating widely online.
Media reports had alleged that Aamanee Adebiyi-King, an SS1 Science student, was held inside the school’s Naval Police office after her mother disagreed with a naval officer during a conversation on the parents’ group chat.
According to the student’s father, the issue started when his wife criticised the proposed PTA constitution, describing it as “putting parents into slavery,” while also questioning why their daughter was required to take 13 subjects when the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) allows students to sit for only nine.
He said a naval officer later sent private messages to his wife and instructed her to report to the school. The family was then told their daughter had been taken to the Naval Police office pending their arrival.
However, in a statement addressing the controversy, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, Director of Naval Information, dismissed the reports as entirely untrue.
“This is completely false. No child was detained at any time,” he said.
“The student was simply asked to go and invite her parents to the school, which is a normal procedure when clarification is needed. The parents did not come. As we speak, the student and her parents are at home. Please beware of false narratives.”
Adams-Aliu also emphasised that Nigerian Navy schools have a long-standing reputation for providing quality and affordable education, producing generations of well-trained and disciplined students across the country.
