The Lagos State Government has officially dismissed recent claims suggesting a surge in kidnapping incidents along the Gbagada Expressway, a major arterial route connecting the mainland of Lagos State, Nigeria, to key commercial districts. The controversy erupted after a flyer purportedly issued by the state government circulated on social media, warning residents of escalating abductions and alerting them to the so-called “one chance” method allegedly employed by criminals using commercial buses to target commuters.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, took to his official X handle on Friday to address the misinformation, urging residents not to panic. He stated: “Good morning Lagos, please beware of this fake news circulating again! We have addressed it before, but those spreading false information continue to recycle it. Kindly disregard this notification. Thank you. We advise that you share this information with your family and friends, as heightened awareness and collective vigilance are crucial in maintaining the safety and well-being of our community.”

Okay News reports that the Lagos State Government emphasized the importance of relying solely on verified information from official security and government channels. Authorities have reassured the public that there has been no recent spike in kidnappings along the expressway and encouraged commuters to remain vigilant while navigating major roads.

The state government’s swift response is part of ongoing efforts to combat the spread of false information, which has become increasingly common on social media platforms and messaging applications. Residents are being reminded that verifying news before sharing it helps prevent unnecessary fear and confusion.
