The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, who leads law enforcement operations in the South Eastern region of Nigeria, has directed the immediate enhancement of security in schools and churches across the state. The directive is part of a broader preventive strategy aimed at deterring threats and maintaining a safe environment for education and worship. Okay News reports.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Spokesman of the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, explained that the Commissioner of Police instructed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders to boost ongoing patrols and surveillance activities. These measures form part of the Police Command’s continued efforts to address insecurity and avert disruptions to public order.
Ikenga noted that the Command has reinforced intelligence-led security operations and improved collaboration with local community stakeholders. According to him, these steps are designed to ensure more efficient coordination that enhances safety across all communities in Anambra State.
He highlighted that the Commissioner of Police commended the increasing level of public alertness and cooperation from residents. According to the Spokesman, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has announced strengthened security measures across schools and churches in Anambra State as part of a proactive strategy to prevent threats and ensure a secure environment for learning and worship.”
The statement also added, “Furthermore, the Commissioner of Police commended the growing unity of safety consciousness among residents, noting that Ndi Anambra have continued to demonstrate commendable cooperation, vigilance, and the spirit of being their brothers’ keepers.”
Ikenga stated that this collective commitment from residents has played a significant role in supporting the Command’s work in sustaining peace throughout the state. He emphasised that the Commissioner of Police has ordered continuous patrols, deeper intelligence gathering, and stronger partnerships with communities to ensure that security measures remain effective.
The statement also recalled earlier developments from November 2, when the Police Command received Advance Tactical Teams deployed from the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria. That deployment was part of nationwide arrangements made by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to strengthen security structures ahead of the upcoming governorship election in Anambra State.
Commissioner Orutugu had told journalists in Awka, the state capital, that the teams brought additional manpower and technical capacity, including specialised units trained for high-risk operations, as well as aerial surveillance tools such as drones and helicopters. He stated that these assets were supplied under the Police Force’s operational strategy for bolstering local formations.
According to the Police Command, the latest directive demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the Anambra State Police to protecting lives and property while continuing to adjust security approaches to address evolving threats across the state.
