Nigeria’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will meet on Wednesday to consider the Federal Government’s final ASUU strike terms, a move expected to determine whether a nationwide university strike will commence or be suspended.

Okay News reports that the review of the ASUU strike terms will take place at an emergency National Executive Council meeting, where representatives from public universities across Nigeria will present updates from their branches and decide the union’s next steps.

According to union officials, the latest ASUU strike terms from the Federal Government cover funding commitments for universities, outstanding academic allowances, revitalisation needs, and reforms to improve compliance with global higher-education standards.

ASUU leaders noted that compliance with previously agreed benchmarks — including those tied to UNESCO’s recommended funding thresholds — will heavily influence how members vote on the ASUU strike terms, especially with Nigeria’s university system already facing global competitiveness challenges.

Government negotiators have stated that the revised ASUU strike terms are designed to ensure sustainability, accountability, and phased implementation aligned with the country’s wider economic reforms and education-sector priorities.

Ahead of the NEC meeting, several ASUU branches across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones held internal congresses to evaluate the ASUU strike terms, with some chapters expressing concerns about timelines, verification processes, and long-standing trust deficits between both parties.

Education analysts say the outcome of ASUU’s deliberations will have significant implications for Nigeria’s nearly two million university students, many of whom have experienced repeated disruptions linked to previous disputes over ASUU strike terms and sector financing.

International observers monitoring Nigeria’s education commitments — especially those tied to the African Union’s Continental Education Strategy — have also emphasised that stable academic calendars depend on durable agreements consistent with the ASUU strike terms now under review.

ASUU’s final decision will be communicated after Wednesday’s meeting, and the union has signalled that acceptance or rejection of the ASUU strike terms will be based strictly on documented commitments, verifiable timelines, and nationwide member consensus.
