President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the Federal Republic of Nigeria swore in the newly appointed leadership of the National Population Commission during a formal ceremony held on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The National Population Commission is the statutory agency responsible for coordinating national censuses, civil registration and demographic research that guide long-term development planning for Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa.

Okay News reports that the event took place shortly before President Tinubu chaired the Federal Executive Council meeting, which is the top decision-making body of the federal government. The President arrived at the Council Chamber at exactly 1:31 in the afternoon to begin the day’s engagements.

Following the formal reading of citations, five new Federal Permanent Secretaries were sworn in. Those inducted into office included Abdulkarim Ibrahim, Dr John Ezeamama, Dr Abdul-Sule Garba, Dr Isiaku Mohammed and Dr Ukaire Chigbowu. They each took their oath of service at 1:42 in the afternoon and proceeded to sign the official registry of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

By 1:47 in the afternoon, President Tinubu proceeded to administer the oath of office to Dr Aminu Yusuf, who was appointed as Chairman of the National Population Commission on the ninth of October. He was sworn in alongside two newly appointed commissioners of the commission, including Dr Tonga Betara from Yobe State, in North-East Nigeria.

The National Population Commission’s role is central to the country’s development agenda, as it is responsible for the collection of vital statistics, census operations and demographic information required by both national and international partners.

During the Federal Executive Council session that followed, the Council observed a minute of silence in memory of Ambassador Joy Ogwu, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, who passed away on the thirteenth of October 2025 at the age of seventy-nine. The tribute preceded the commencement of the eighth sitting of the Council for the year.
