The newly elected leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Ogun State Joint Campus Committee, has urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to prioritize the modernization of infrastructure and the enhancement of funding across all state-owned tertiary institutions.

Okay News reports that the students made this appeal on Thursday during the inauguration of the association’s new leadership and an educational summit at the Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Allied Sciences, Ilese-Ijebu, in Ijebu North-East Local Government Area.

Gabriel Francis, the newly elected chairman of NANS Ogun JCC, commended Governor Abiodun for his ongoing support of the student community and investments in the education sector. However, he emphasized that critical gaps remain that must be addressed to strengthen higher education in the state.

He stated, “Our institutions urgently need improved infrastructure—modern classrooms, functional laboratories, hostels, libraries, safe learning environments and reliable transportation systems. These demands are not luxuries but necessities for meaningful education.”

Francis further called for increased financial support for state tertiary institutions, noting, “Adequate subvention is the backbone of institutional stability and directly influences the welfare of both staff and students. Many of our campuses struggle with insufficient funding, which affects teaching quality, staff motivation, resource availability and the overall learning environment.”

The students also appealed for the reactivation and expansion of bursary and scholarship schemes, highlighting their importance in cushioning students from economic hardships. Francis stressed, “At a time when economic realities are hitting families hard, bursaries serve as lifelines that support retention, excellence and stability among students. We urge the government to consider a structured, timely and transparent bursary system that guarantees yearly support to every eligible student.”

In his goodwill message, Adeyemi Ajasa, National Public Relations Officer of NANS, encouraged the new leadership to remain committed to the welfare of students, noting that the association’s relevance depends entirely on its dedication to its constituents.
