United Nigeria Airlines has begun direct flights to Ilorin, introducing a new link in Nigeria’s domestic aviation network and reinforcing Ilorin’s position as an emerging hub in the North Central region. The inaugural service landed at the Tunde Idiagbon Airport on Friday, signaling a strategic expansion for the carrier.

The airline’s Director of Operations, Captain Ahmad Ibrahim, described the Ilorin launch as part of a broader plan to widen the airline’s reach and strengthen its role in connecting key commercial cities. The maiden flight, operated with an ERJ-145 aircraft and carrying 41 passengers, received the traditional water salute upon arrival.

Ibrahim said the new route follows recent network additions, including the Accra service, and forms part of the airline’s ongoing growth strategy. Since commencing operations in February 2021, United Nigeria Airlines has expanded to 14 domestic destinations with a fleet of nine aircraft.

The Kwara State Government welcomed the development, describing it as a catalyst for increased investment and improved mobility. Representing the governor, the Commissioner for Transportation, Lafia Aliyu Korasabi, said the service would ease travel for residents, attract visitors and support ongoing economic initiatives aimed at positioning the state as a competitive regional centre.

The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, also commended the launch, calling it a sign of steady growth in the state’s aviation landscape. He encouraged the airline to maintain operational consistency and customer-friendly pricing to sustain the route’s momentum.

Passengers on the inaugural flight reported positive experiences, noting smooth operations, professional cabin service and a sense of relief from long road travel between Lagos, Abuja and Ilorin. Many described the new route as timely and essential for frequent travellers across the region.
