The Kano State House of Assembly, the legislative arm of government in Kano State, northern Nigeria, has been thrown into deep mourning following the deaths of two serving lawmakers who reportedly passed away within hours of each other on Wednesday, 24 December, 2025.

One of the deceased lawmakers is Aminu Sa’adu Ungoggo, a senior legislator and Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, a powerful committee responsible for budget planning and oversight in the Assembly. Ungoggo was confirmed dead while on official duty at the Kano State House of Assembly complex in Kano, the capital city of Kano State and one of the largest metropolitan areas in northern Nigeria.

According to an official statement issued on Wednesday by Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, the spokesperson to the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, the late lawmaker reportedly took ill briefly before passing away inside the legislative complex.

“The late Honorable Ungoggo died while in active duty at the Kano State House of Assembly. He is survived by his wife and children,” the statement said.

Okay News reports that the sudden nature of Ungoggo’s death has heightened shock and grief within the Assembly, especially given his strategic role in financial and legislative planning at a critical period for the state’s governance and budgetary processes.

Hours after Ungoggo’s passing, reports also confirmed the death of another serving lawmaker, Sarki Daneji, officially identified as Aliyu Sarkin Daneji. His death further deepened the sense of loss within the Assembly, as lawmakers and staff struggled to come to terms with losing two colleagues in a single day.

Reacting to the tragic development, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibril Falgore, a senior legislator and presiding officer of the Assembly, expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased lawmakers, their constituents, and members of the legislature.

“Honorable Ungoggo’s death comes at a critical time when Kano citizens needed him most,” Falgore said, describing the loss as irreplaceable to the Assembly and the people he represented.

Ungoggo was scheduled to be laid to rest later on Wednesday evening at exactly 6:00 pm in his hometown, in line with Islamic burial rites commonly observed in northern Nigeria.

The deaths of the two lawmakers have raised concerns within political and civic circles in Kano State, with many calling for institutional support for grieving families and renewed attention to the welfare of public office holders.
