The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at Nwaorubi in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State has been destroyed by fire.

The fire outbreak is said to have begun in an unspecified area of the office at about 1:30 am on Sunday, April 5, and eventually razed down the entire building.

Both sensitive and non-sensitive materials were destroyed in the inferno, according to the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Gabriel Ada.

Ada, who confirmed the incident, stated that the fire is believed to have been caused by the generator.

The commissioner also said that the incident would constitute a minor obstacle to the governorship and state assembly elections, set for Saturday, April 11, due to some of the materials destroyed.

Ada however said that no card readers were damaged in the fire as they had been relocated to a safe place.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, also confirmed the fire outbreak and told Channels Television that some arrests had been made and investigations were still ongoing into the incident.
