Former senator and human rights activist, Shehu Sani, has commented on reports of United States military airstrikes on terrorist hideouts in Nigeria’s North-West, stressing that foreign countries cannot permanently shoulder Nigeria’s security burden.

Reacting to a statement by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), Sani noted that if the strikes were conducted in collaboration with Nigerian authorities, then the action was justified considering the persistent threat posed by armed groups in the region.

Okay News reports that the former lawmaker described terrorists operating in parts of northern Nigeria as destructive forces that thrive on violence and must be confronted firmly.

Sani also rejected claims that terrorist attacks in Nigeria are targeted at only one religious group, calling such narratives misleading. He maintained that while international partners may assist through coordinated or unilateral actions, lasting peace and security in Nigeria can only be achieved through internal resolve and effective domestic security efforts.
