News network, Al Jazeera has confirmed the release of two of its journalists who were being detained by the Nigerian military.

Ahmed Idris and Ali Mustapha were arrested on March 24 in Maiduguri, Borno State after being accused of loitering.

The two journalists were subsequently detained in a hotel in the capital city but were eventually released after the network threatened legal action against the military.

“We’re pleased for Ahmed and Ali that their ordeal is over. They’re looking forward to spending some time with their families and loved ones,” Salah Negm, Director of News for Al Jazeera English, said.

“I know that both of them want to thank everyone that helped secure their release, including NGOs, politicians and fellow journalists,” he added.

Idris and Ali were covering the Nigerian military’s operations against Boko Haram when they were arrested.

They have since left Borno State and are now in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
