Nigeria’s former presidential candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, alongside prominent political figures from the South-East geopolitical zone, officially declared their membership in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, in Enugu, the capital city of Enugu State, South-East Nigeria.

The gathering marked a significant political shift as the leaders revealed their decision followed several months of consultations and strategic discussions. Speaking during the event, the South-East leaders explained that their move was aimed at creating a united front with other opposition parties across Nigeria.

“After months of consultations, we have decided to join the ADC and collaborate with other opposition leaders from across the country to rescue Nigeria from the poor governance of the All Progressives Congress (APC),” a senior political figure from the region stated.

Okay News reports that this development is seen as a critical realignment in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly ahead of future electoral contests. The ADC, a smaller but growing opposition party, has been seeking to strengthen its influence across key geopolitical zones in Nigeria, with the South-East now emerging as a focal area for its expansion.

Political analysts suggest that the move by Obi and other South-East leaders could reshape alliances and challenge the dominance of the APC, which currently controls both the federal government and several state administrations.

This declaration underscores a broader strategy by opposition forces in Nigeria to consolidate resources and political capital, signaling an intensification of political competition ahead of upcoming elections.
