Former Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba on Sunday disproved the claim of former President Olusegun Obasanjo that the late legend, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, was never appointed the Yoruba leader.

Osoba, who presented an August 13, 1966 edition of Daily Sketch that reported the unanimous election of the late legend by leaders of various political leanings, said Obasanjo’s statement was an outright disruption of facts.

He disproved the former president during an interaction with select journalists in Lagos, noting that the first Military Governor of Western Nigeria, Major General Adeyinka Adebayo presided over a series of meetings held from August 10 to 12, 1966 in Ibadan where Awolowo was unanimously elected.

He added that Obasanjo was the Garrison Commander at the now 2nd Machanised Division of the Nigerian Army and was a member of Adebayo’s ruling council, hence there was no way he would not have known about Awolowo’s emergence.

He named leaders of diverse political interests that attended the Ibadan meeting to include late Dr. Koye Majekodunmi, who had the same political ideology as Chief Awolowo. Late Chief TOS Benson, a staunch supporter of Late Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe till death, was part of Chief Awolowo political family.
