Two men – Opeyemi Oni and Adewale Salami – were on Wednesday charged before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan for allegedly stealing 24 backup batteries valued at N1.2 million belonging to a service provider, MTN Nigeria.

The duo – Oni, 22, and Salami, 42 – is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Sergeant Sunday Ojeleye told the court that Salami, a security guard with MTN, conspired with Oni and another still at large to steal the batteries.

He said the offences were committed on October 18 at Amuloko in Jobele area of Ibadan.

“The accused stole the backup batteries, but were caught by the police.”

The offences violated the provisions of Section 383, 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The accused pleaded not guilty.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Abdulateef Adebisi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N1 million each with two sureties each in like sum.

Adebisi said one of the sureties must be a landed property owner as part of the bail conditions.
