Chief Godswill Akpabio, the Senate Minority Leader, has denied reports that he pledged to build a new hostel for the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, Anambra State, during the institution’s 7th convocation lecture.

He said that he never promised to build a new hostel for the institution as published.

According to him: “What I said after the lecture at the 7th Convocation Ceremony of the school was that as a member of the National Assembly, I will work with the relevant federal agencies to ensure that another hostel is built for the students, which could also be in the form of constituency projects.”

The correction “became imperative so that the public, especially the University community would not go away with the erroneous belief that Senator Akpabio promised to personally build for them a hostel.”

Akpabio who delivered a lecture titled, The Nigerian Question: Ethics in an Age of Uncertainty, called on Nigerian leaders to uphold ethics and morality as part of efforts to curb corruption in the country. He defined ethics as “doing things that are right and moral.”

He commended the Federal Government for fighting corruption but stressed that it should be done across board.

Akpabio also advised political leaders against cross carpeting, saying it was mostly done in selfish interest.

He assured that members of the National Assembly would continue to maintain ethics and good moral behaviour in making laws in the interest of the masses.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Fidelis Okafor, commended Akpabio for his promise to build a hostel in the institution.
