Lagos Recovers N25m Paid to Ghost Workers

Lagos State government said it has recovered N25 million being paid to ghost and dead workers at the local government level.

The revelation was contained in the brochure of the first quarterly town hall meeting addressed by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode recently in Ikorodu area of the state.

According to information gotten from the office of the auditor-general for local governments salaries were being paid to retirees and dead workers at the various local governments and Local Government Education Authorities after their terminal dates for three months.

The report said in January, 2016, about N4.649 million being paid to retirees and deceased local government staff were recovered, while in February 2016, N3.594 million was recovered.

In March 2016 alone, N16.960 million were recovered from retired ghost workers and deceased workers.

The report further stated that there was the re-certification of 140 names of staff of various Local Government and Local Government Education Authorities deleted due to wrong dates of appointment and birth for reinstatement on payroll.

Meanwhile, to address some of the numerous problems at the local government levels, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly recently passed a bill to amend the Lagos State local government administration law and forwarded it to the state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, for assent.
