Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has declared that the state is no longer affected by frequent national grid collapses, following major investments in alternative energy and local power regulation.
Speaking at the Government House in Umuahia, Otti said Abia now generates electricity from organic waste converted into biogas, reducing dependence on Nigeria’s unstable national grid.
Okay News reports that the governor explained that Abia has taken over electricity regulation from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and now controls power generation, transmission and distribution within the state.
He added that the arrangement has been accepted by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), with negotiations ongoing to fully settle outstanding obligations. The pilot project is already powering key areas, including parts of Umuahia.
Governor Otti noted that the new system protected Abia from recent national grid collapses recorded in January 2026, stressing that energy independence is critical to economic growth and efficiency. He said the initiative mirrors the Aba Power model and is aimed at ensuring stable electricity supply, improved regulation and long-term development across the state.
