Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria — The government of Abia State has raised concerns over what it described as an alleged plan by political actors to organise a protest aimed at destabilising the administration of Governor Alex Otti.
In a statement released on Friday, April 3, 2026, the Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, said intelligence reports suggested that individuals were mobilising groups from Aba and neighbouring states to stage a demonstration reportedly tagged “Tinubu Dey Work, Otti Dey Chop.”
The state government said the proposed protest was designed to promote what it called a false narrative that the federal government of Nigeria funded projects currently being executed by the state administration. Officials stressed that the government had previously clarified that federal refunds for such projects had been discontinued.
Okay News reports that authorities warned the planned demonstration could escalate into violence if not handled carefully, particularly if protesters confront security operatives such as the State Task Force operating in Aba.
The statement read, “The alleged plot is designed to trigger confrontation between the protesters and security operatives, particularly the State Task Force in Aba, which could escalate into violence, loss of lives, and a breakdown of law and order.
“The government warns that such actions may be part of efforts to create instability in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“While we reaffirm our commitment to democratic principles and tolerance of opposition, we will take decisive action against any individual or group found attempting to endanger public safety under the guise of political expression”.
Authorities also urged parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against participating in protests that could expose them to danger. The government further assured residents that it remained committed to maintaining peace and security while allowing political competition to take place without intimidation.
The statement emphasised that residents should remain calm as security agencies continue to monitor developments and take steps to prevent any breakdown of law and order in the state.
