Okay News reports that Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has called on traditional rulers across the state to lead with humility, integrity, and a renewed sense of responsibility toward promoting good governance at the grassroots.

Abiodun, represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Toyin Taiwo, made the call during an orientation workshop organized in Abeokuta for 72 newly installed royal fathers in the state. The event was themed “Traditional Rulers: The Harbingers of Good Governance.”

The governor described royal fathers as the first point of contact in community conflict resolution and vital custodians of justice, peace, and cultural heritage.
“This event could not have been more apt, as it underscores the central roles royal fathers play in sustaining peace and progress within our communities, functioning as the bridge between the government and the people,” he said.

He further noted that Obas are the moral compasses of their communities and should continue to be models of selfless and progressive leadership. “It is therefore incumbent on you, our traditional rulers, to always lead with dignity, be models of selfless and progressive leadership in your communities, and work in tandem with the government’s determination to bring development to every nook and cranny of the state,” Abiodun added.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, said the workshop was part of resolutions reached during the Ogun State Council of Obas meeting earlier in the year. He noted that the programme aimed to equip new traditional rulers with essential leadership skills to navigate modern governance challenges.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Rotimiolu Akinlesi, said the ministry would continue to prioritize capacity-building initiatives for traditional rulers to fast-track local development.

In his remarks, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, commended the state government for organizing the training and urged participants to use the knowledge gained to improve their leadership and community impact.

A communiqué issued at the end of the workshop stated that 72 newly installed royal fathers—including 11 First Class Obas, 17 Part II Obas, and 44 coronets—attended the event. It emphasized the importance of traditional institutions in maintaining governance stability, preserving cultural values, and promoting sustainable development across Ogun State.
