Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has ordered the immediate overhaul of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), okaynews.com reports.
The order was contained in a press statement released by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity of the Vice President, Laolu Akande.
Mr Akande disclosed that Professor Osinbajo directed the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to with immediate effect overhaul the management and activities of SARS. He added that the directive was as a result of widely reported abuse of Human Rights around the country by operatives of the Special Arm of the Nigeria Police.
It will be recalled that Nigerians on the social media, especially Twitter have raised campaign against Police brutality on Nigerians who have fallen victims to overzealous Police officers. The campaign tagged #EndSARS has gotten awareness around the country with no attention from the Federal Government, until now.
According to Mr Akande, IGP Idris was instructed to disband the current structure of the SARS and form another Unit which will solely be for armed robbery and kidnapping crimes and must be fully kitted at all times while on duty.
