ABUJA, Nigeria – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for an independent investigation into the death of Mary Habila, who reportedly died at the residence of Works Minister David Umahi.
Okay News reports that the opposition party said the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death raised questions of public accountability, particularly because the incident allegedly occurred at the home of a serving cabinet minister.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ADC demanded a probe free from executive influence, including a full autopsy to establish the exact cause of death and the publication of the investigation’s findings.
The party questioned the nature of Habila’s official assignment, her presence at the minister’s private residence and the circumstances that led to her death. It said the issues should be resolved through evidence and an independent inquiry rather than official assurances.
The ADC also accused the Tinubu administration of shielding senior officials from scrutiny whenever serious allegations emerge. The party alleged that the government had prioritised the protection of political reputations over transparency and accountability.
It further called on Umahi to step aside pending the conclusion of an independent investigation, arguing that the minister should not continue in office while questions linked to Habila’s death remain unresolved.
The ADC described Habila’s death as a matter requiring urgent attention, saying her family deserved the truth and Nigerians deserved a government that treats accountability as a foundation of public trust. The statement was signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.
