AFCON 2025: Daka’s Late Goal Rescues Zambia in 1–1 Draw Against Mali

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

Zambia came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Mali, thanks to a last-minute header from Patson Daka.

Mali initially took the lead through Sinayoko, who capitalized on a quick corner to give his team the advantage. Despite dominating possession and creating multiple chances, Mali were unable to extend their lead.

Zambia struggled to create opportunities for much of the match, registering their first shot only in the 74th minute. However, persistent attacking from set-pieces, including long throws from M. Banda, eventually paid off. In stoppage time, Daka timed his run perfectly to head in a deep cross, securing a dramatic equalizer in the 90+2 minute.

The result leaves Mali frustrated after controlling large parts of the game, while Zambia will take encouragement from their resilience and late heroics.

Both teams now look ahead to the remainder of the tournament, with Mali facing hosts, Morocco on Friday, 26th December 2025 (21:00 GMT+1). Zambia seeks a win to cement their qualification chances when they face Group A bottom-positioned Comoros on the same day, Friday 26th December 2025 at 18:30 GMT+1.
