The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded three points and three goals to Nigeria following the abandonment of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Libya on October 15, 2024 in Benghazi.

The decision comes after an investigation by the CAF Disciplinary Board into the circumstances surrounding the match.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles walked away from the match due to poor treatment by the Libyan hosts, which left the Nigerian team stranded at an abandoned airport for nearly 24 hours, leading to the game’s cancellation.

CAF found the Libya Football Federation in violation of several key regulations, including Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

The CAF Disciplinary Board issued a five-point ruling:

  1. The Libya Football Federation was found to have breached Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
  2. The match between Libya and Nigeria (Match No.87) was declared lost by forfeit by Libya, awarding Nigeria a 3-0 victory.
  3. The Libya Football Federation was fined USD 50,000 for its actions.
  4. The fine must be paid within 60 days of notification.
  5. All other motions or requests for relief were dismissed.
