Afenifere Leadership Dispute: UK and US Chapters Reject Olaitan’s Appointment

Tensions have emerged within the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, as its United Kingdom and United States chapters have rejected the appointment of Oba Oladipo Olaitan as the group’s leader.

In a statement released on Saturday by the chairmen of both chapters, Babatunde Shianaba (UK) and Dr. Durojaiye Akindutire (US), the groups insisted that Afenifere remains under the leadership of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, a respected elder statesman and longtime leader of the movement.

Oba Olaitan, who previously served as deputy to the late Pa Ayo Adebanjo, was appointed during a meeting held on Tuesday in Sanya Ogbo Ijebu, Ogun State. The decision came just days after the passing of Adebanjo at the age of 97.

However, the diaspora chapters view the appointment as illegitimate, arguing that Afenifere’s structure and values should not be undermined by internal factions.

“Afenifere has always stood for the welfare of the Yoruba people, advocating for justice, equity, and good governance. It is against Yoruba culture and values for younger individuals to disregard elders or attempt to assume authority improperly,” the statement read.

The groups also criticized those supporting the appointment, calling them “political opportunists” who should refrain from using Afenifere’s name for personal interests. They urged Oba Olaitan to step back, emphasizing that traditional rulers should be unifying figures rather than sources of division in socio-political organizations.

As the debate continues, the leadership crisis within Afenifere highlights deeper tensions within the group, raising questions about its future direction and unity.
