Addis Ababa, ETHIOPIA — The African Union Commission (AUC) has expressed deep concern and strongly condemned reports regarding Israel’s decision to appoint a diplomatic envoy to Somaliland.
In a press release issued on Sunday, April 19, 2026, the Commission reaffirmed its unwavering respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia.
Okay News reports that the African Union does not recognize Somaliland as an independent state and views any unilateral recognition as null and void.
The Commission recalled the communiqué from the 1324th meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council held on January 6, 2026, which warned that such diplomatic actions risk undermining regional stability. The statement emphasized that the Union’s position remains in strict accordance with the Constitutive Act of the African Union and international law.
The African Union reiterated its commitment to supporting Somalia’s national cohesion and peace. Mr. Nuur Mohamud Sheekh, spokesperson for the AUC Chairperson, stated that the Union continues to prioritize the unity of Somalia amidst these reported external diplomatic shifts.
This development comes as Addis Ababa continues to host key discussions under the African Union’s “Year of Water Sustainability” framework for 2026.
