Ahmed Musa Urges Super Eagles to Gift Him Victory Against Benin as Birthday Present

By Oluwadara Akingbohungbe

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has called on his teammates to mark his birthday with a crucial win as Nigeria faces the Benin Republic today in Uyo for a decisive World Cup qualifier.

In a short video shared on the Super Eagles’ official X handle, the 33-year-old forward described the encounter as more than just a game, saying that victory would be “the best birthday gift” his teammates could give him.

“Hello guys, today is the day, and today is my birthday. We all know what is at stake as we wait for the result of the South Africa–Rwanda game. I know you can do it. This is the best birthday gift that you’re gonna give me, guys. I miss you all. I wish you best of luck,” Musa said.

Musa, Nigeria’s most-capped player, encouraged the team to maintain the same energy and determination they displayed in their previous match. “I know we can do it. Let’s do it again today. Best of luck,” he added.

Okay News reports that the video message came just hours before the high-stakes Group C World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium. The Super Eagles must win to keep their qualification hopes alive after missing out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Nigeria currently sits third in the group with 14 points, trailing leaders Benin Republic by three points and South Africa by one. To advance, the Eagles must beat Benin and hope South Africa does not win against Rwanda in Mbombela.

If South Africa wins, Nigeria would still need a convincing victory to reach the playoff stage. However, the team will be without key players such as Ademola Lookman, who is suspended, while defenders Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel remain unavailable due to injuries.

The crucial encounter is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, with fans hopeful for a strong performance that could revive the nation’s World Cup dream.
