Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has extended his medical leave indefinitely, according to a letter sent to the lawmakers of the Ondo State House of Assembly. Initially scheduled to resume on July 6, 2023, the governor has prolonged his leave based on his doctor’s advice, emphasizing the need for sufficient rest after recovering. The State House of Assembly has received the official letter announcing the extension.

The Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt (Hon) Olamide Oladiji, confirmed the governor’s extended leave and acknowledged that it aligns with Section 190 of the Nigerian Constitution. During Governor Akeredolu’s absence, Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa will continue to serve as the acting governor until a written declaration states otherwise.

Expressing gratitude for the governor’s swift recovery, the Speaker remained hopeful that Governor Akeredolu would soon resume his official duties. This marks the first time the governor has sought an indefinite medical leave for treatment.

Governor Akeredolu’s absence has led to some divisions within his government, with cabinet members engaging in heated discussions ahead of the 2024 governorship election.
