Abuja, NIGERIA – Senate President Godswill Akpabio has attributed the recent surge in national insecurity to the upcoming general elections, claiming that the violence is being sponsored by political opponents to undermine the administration.
Okay News gathered that Akpabio made these remarks on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, during the official launch of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) Corporate Headquarters in Abuja. The Senate President asserted that the security challenges facing the country are artificial and predicted that the situation would stabilize within two weeks of the 2027 elections.
“Insecurity is increasing because election is coming, because people don’t know what to do again,” Akpabio stated. “Immediately after the election, two weeks after the election, the insecurity will stop. The insecurity is being sponsored by people.”
During his speech, Akpabio also aimed a sharp critique at the opposition, specifically mocking Peter Obi for leaving his previous political platform. He argued that the opposition is in “disarray” and that their inability to compete with President Bola Tinubu’s performance has led to the alleged sponsorship of unrest.
The event, which saw President Tinubu commission the new 16-story world-class edifice, was attended by top government officials, including the leadership of the National Assembly, the National Security Adviser, and several state governors. The facility is the first major landmark for the agency since its transformation from the FIRS to the NRS in 2025.
