Professor Joash Amupitan has announced plans to conduct a full audit of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), focusing on logistics and operations during the 2023 general elections.

He said the review aims to identify key challenges within the commission and develop solutions in partnership with relevant stakeholders.

Amupitan made the disclosure during his screening by the Senate Committee of the Whole on Thursday.

Referencing a Supreme Court ruling, he explained that INEC’s Results Viewing Portal (IREV) was never part of the official results collation system, though this was not clearly communicated to the public before the elections.

“A lot of Nigerians assumed IREV was used for collation, but the Supreme Court clarified that it was not,” he stated.

Amupitan further emphasized the need for an independent electoral offences commission to handle investigations and prosecutions related to election misconduct.

“INEC does not currently have the structure or capacity to investigate and prosecute electoral offences,” he said.

The audit is expected to help strengthen transparency, improve logistics, and restore public confidence in future electoral processes.
