Senator Abubakar Kyari, Deputy National Chairman (North) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has assumed the role of National Chairman of the party.

This transition occurred during a National Working Committee (NWC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday.

Following the NWC meeting, Senator Kyari formally announced the resignations of Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the party, respectively. In accordance with the party’s constitution, Festus Fuanter, the Deputy National Secretary, will serve as the acting National Secretary of the APC.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Senator Kyari stated, “As members of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), we are here to provide you with updates on recent developments within the party. We wish to inform you of the voluntary resignations of Senator Abdullahi Adamu as the National Chairman and Senator Iyiola Omisore as the National Secretary.”

He further added, “According to the constitution of the APC, it is now my responsibility, as the Deputy National Chairman (North), to assume the role of the acting National Chairman. Similarly, Festus Fuanter, the Deputy National Secretary, will assume the role of the acting National Secretary.”

Senator Kyari also announced the postponement of the scheduled National Caucus meeting on July 18, 2023, and the National Executive Committee meeting of the APC, originally planned for the following night. He assured that a new date for these meetings would be communicated in due course.

When asked about the reasons behind the resignations of Senator Adamu and Senator Omisore, Senator Kyari replied, “At this point, the individuals have voluntarily resigned, and that is the information available at present. The reasons for their resignations will be shared with you in the near future.”

Senator Adamu was absent from the NWC meeting, while Senator Omisore left the meeting abruptly, held at the party secretariat in Abuja. Senator Kyari, who represented Borno North Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly, chaired the APC NWC meeting.
