The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expelled Rauf Aregbesola, former Minister of Interior and two-term Governor of Osun State, over allegations of anti-party activities.

Aregbesola’s expulsion was confirmed in an official letter issued by the party leadership, citing breaches of Article 21 of the APC Constitution, which outlines disciplinary measures for members.

The letter, titled “Allegations of Anti-Party Activities – Conveyance of State Exco Decision to You,” was signed jointly by Tajudeen Lawal, the State Chairman, and Alao Olabisi Kamoru, the Secretary. The party stated that the decision followed a thorough investigation and subsequent approval by the State Executive Committee (SEC).

The letter read:
“At the end of the investigation, the SEC considered the report of the Disciplinary Committee. Having carefully reviewed the findings and recommendations, the SEC resolved to approve your immediate expulsion from the APC.”

The APC accused Aregbesola of actions that undermined the party’s unity and integrity, cautioning him against identifying as a member or representing the party in any capacity.

Aregbesola had previously led a faction within the APC known as The Osun Progressives, which was later rebranded as the Omoluabi Caucus. The faction had long been at odds with the state’s party leadership.

His expulsion coincided with a meeting of the Omoluabi Caucus on Sunday, during which Aregbesola and his supporters announced their decision to leave the APC.

At the meeting, Aregbesola reportedly told his followers that the decision to exit the party was necessary to build a new political movement.

“We are leaving to build a stronger political movement,” he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, APC officials in Osun State defended the disciplinary action, describing it as essential for restoring order within the party.

“The party cannot tolerate disloyalty and divisive actions,” an unnamed official said, adding that the expulsion sends a strong message about the importance of unity and discipline within the APC.
