The All Progressives Congress (APC) is heading for a sweeping victory in the recently concluded Local Government elections in Lagos State, as results continue to trickle in from across the state’s 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs.

The polls, held on Saturday, July 12, recorded a largely peaceful atmosphere across over 13,000 polling units, although turnout was described as modest in many areas. Despite the low numbers, voting went ahead with minimal disruptions, according to observers.

Early results released by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) show that the APC is dominating both chairmanship and councillorship contests, beating rival parties by wide margins in key districts.

In Lagos Island Local Government, Taiwo Oyekan of the APC emerged victorious in the chairmanship race, securing 28,385 votes, far ahead of his closest opponent, Ajibade Olusegun of the PDP, who trailed with 1,271 votes.

Over in Amuwo-Odofin, the APC also cruised to a decisive win, with Prince Lanre Sanusi (PLS) receiving 24,926 votes. His Labour Party opponent, Engr. Seyi Ipinlaye, managed just 1,962 votes. Sanusi’s win has been hailed by party loyalists as a “record-setting result,” following what they described as months of door-to-door mobilization and youth engagement across the LCDA.

Tunde Azeez, known by his supporters as “Disco,” won convincingly in Agege LGA, polling 31,503 votes under the APC. Candidates from the APM and ZLP received 86 and 10 votes, respectively, putting up little resistance in the tightly organised contest.

Out of 19 political parties registered with LASIEC, 15 fielded candidates, but only the APC contested every available seat.

The PDP had candidates in 45 councils and 259 wards, while the Labour Party appeared in 22 LGAs and 130 wards. Other parties such as ZLP, AAC, AA, and YPP also participated but fielded fewer contenders.

In total, 57 chairmanship and vice-chairmanship positions, along with 376 councillorship seats, were on the ballot.

Although turnout remained low compared to past elections, LASIEC officials commended voters and stakeholders for conducting themselves peacefully, while security agents ensured calm across polling centres.
