KADUNA, NIGERIA — The Arewa Youth Assembly on Sunday, April 19, 2026, announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should be allowed to serve a full eight-year tenure and advised Northern politicians against seeking the presidency in 2027.
Okay News reports that the Speaker of the Arewa Youth Assembly, Mohammed Salihu Danlami, said there was “no vacancy in Aso Rock until May 29, 2031,” and that zoning principles must be maintained to preserve national unity.
The group asserted that the North had previously benefited from a two-term tenure under former President Muhammadu Buhari, during which Southern contenders did not disrupt the arrangement. Regarding the 2027 election, the assembly stated, “This is not a matter for debate. In the supreme interest of national cohesion and continuity of governance, Northern political actors must refrain from contesting the presidency in 2027.”
The Arewa Youth Assembly expressed support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding ongoing economic and security reforms. The group specifically noted progress in the removal of the fuel subsidy, exchange rate unification, and the improvement of external reserves, as well as improvements in the debt service-to-revenue ratio.
In the area of security, the group praised the efforts of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, for coordinating operations against banditry and securing the release of kidnapped individuals in Northern Nigeria. The group urged government officials to improve public outreach regarding these policies, stating, “It is not enough to work in silence. Government officials must engage the people and highlight the gains being recorded to strengthen public confidence.”
The Arewa Youth Assembly concluded its statement by affirming its commitment to the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting, “We stand firmly with the President and assure him of the unshakeable support of Northern youths. The call for continuity is clear, and it will prevail.”
