Katsina, Nigeria: On Saturday, April 4, 2026, a group of armed men attacked Mustapha Sadiq, a state officer for the civic technology organisation known as BudgIT, at his home in Katsina State, located in northern Nigeria. BudgIT is a prominent group that promotes transparency and accountability in public finance across the country. The armed men violently assaulted Sadiq, leaving him with severe injuries that required immediate hospital care. As Okay News reports, the attackers also tried to steal his car during the home invasion but failed to do so.

Vahyala Kwaga, the Country Director for BudgIT, confirmed the attack in a public statement released on Friday, April 10, 2026. He detailed the violent nature of the home invasion and the weapons used by the perpetrators. “Initial reports indicate that five men, wielding machetes, broke into his residence at night on the 4th of April 2026 and inflicted severe injuries to his head and upper body,” Kwaga stated.

This incident matters greatly because it raises serious concerns about the safety of civic workers and transparency advocates in Nigeria. While the organisation is still investigating the primary motive behind the home invasion, there are growing fears that Sadiq was targeted because of his professional duties. BudgIT tracks public projects and demands accountability from government officials. Kwaga expressed deep concern over this possibility. “At this time, we are uncertain if the attack was connected to his professional and civic responsibilities of tracking public projects,” the statement noted.

The brutal assault directly affects Sadiq, who is currently recovering from his severe wounds, as well as his family and the broader community of civic workers operating in the region. The organisation has officially reported the violent incident to the Nigerian Police Force to ensure the perpetrators are identified and arrested. “While the attackers also attempted to steal his vehicle, they were unsuccessful, leaving Mustapha with serious injuries that required urgent medical attention,” the organisation added.

Going forward, BudgIT is demanding a thorough and transparent investigation by the authorities. They are specifically asking law enforcement to look into any potential connections between the violent attack and Sadiq’s role in tracking government spending. “We are also asking the police to explore if this has to do with his work of holding the government accountable in a very volatile environment and continuous challenges with the closing civic space,” the organisation added. BudgIT concluded by wishing their officer a swift recovery while urging the government to improve security to prevent such acts from undermining public confidence.
