Obubra, Cross River State, Nigeria – Troops of the Nigerian Army under the 13 Brigade Nigerian Army have arrested two suspected arms couriers and recovered 192 rounds of ammunition during security operations in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State.

Okay News reports that the suspects, identified as Sunday Ayam and Afriday Augustus, were intercepted at the Obubra checkpoint during a stop-and-search operation conducted at about 12:58 pm on March 13, 2026.

The ammunition recovered from the suspects included 192 rounds of Norinco and .223 Remington cartridges commonly used with AK-pattern rifles.

According to the Army, the operation forms part of ongoing security efforts aimed at consolidating earlier successes recorded against armed criminal groups operating in the Odonget Community area.

The development follows a recent operation in which troops neutralised five armed criminals and discovered an illegal gun manufacturing facility in the same area during follow-up operations after security personnel were ambushed while responding to a communal crisis.

Military authorities said preliminary assessments suggest the suspects and the recovered ammunition may be connected to the ongoing hostilities around the Odonget general area.

The suspects are currently in custody while investigations continue to determine the source of the ammunition, its intended destination and their possible involvement in the disturbances.

The Commander of 13 Brigade, Patrick Alimikhena, commended the vigilance of the troops, stating that the arrest highlights the effectiveness of ongoing operations to dismantle criminal networks in the region.

He assured residents that the Army would sustain aggressive patrols, checkpoints and other security operations across its area of responsibility to prevent the movement of illegal arms and maintain peace.

The military also urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and support security agencies with timely information that could assist efforts to apprehend criminal elements operating in the area.
