Retired Maj.-Gen. Garba Wahab, director general of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC), has urged senior military officials and staff at other agencies to focus on mentoring their various organisations.
Wahab made the announcement at the Center’s Critical Thinking and Adaptive Course 2/2022 Participants’ Graduation on Friday in Abuja. Wahab was represented by Senior Research Fellow in NARC, Maj.-Gen. Kabiru Mukhtar.
He added that he was a product of excellent mentoring and that the topic of mentoring had been very important to him.
He asserts that he supports mentoring and has opposed godfatherism, saying that godfathers frequently endanger their godsons or godchildren in the long run.
He claimed that while godfathers spoon-feed godsons, which he claimed was unsustainable, mentors push their mentees to the limit in an effort to get the most out of them.
“Even in service and retirement, I encourage you to really identify potentials in your various organizations, pick them up, develop them, and push them up for the institution’s and Nigeria’s overall good as well as for your own good,” he said.
Wahab stated that managing pressure and crises was a crucial component of leadership and added that decisions made out of rage or emotion frequently have regrettable results.
He claimed that the course was created to give students the skills they need to use critical thinking and pertinent questions to solve both personal and organisational challenges.
He complimented the instructors, resource people, and students for their cooperation and dedication during the course.
According to the programme coordinator, Brig.-Gen. FC Eze (ret. ), the course would help students develop their idea generation and problem-solving skills.
Mrs. Caroline Olori, a Conservator of Park with the National Park Service, spoke on behalf of the participants and stated the course would improve their performance in their respective organisation.
Olori expressed appreciation for the centre for impacting knowledge and stated that the organisation would make use of the skills learned during the training.
