In an exhilarating showdown at Wembley on Sunday, Arsenal emerged victorious in the FA English Community Shield, defeating Manchester City 4-1 on penalties after the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

The annual Community Shield, which serves as the curtain raiser for the new English Premier League (EPL) season, witnessed a slow start from Manchester City, and Arsenal capitalized on their lethargy.

Manchester City’s Cole Palmer broke the deadlock with a goal, but just as it seemed they would clinch the victory, Leandro Trossard’s last-gasp equalizer for Arsenal forced the game into a penalty shootout, where the Gunners proved their mettle.

The victory marks Arsenal’s 17th Community Shield title, placing them second on the all-time winners list, just behind Manchester United.

Remarkably, Arsenal has secured the Shield in the last five appearances, establishing their dominance in the traditional season-opener.

On the other hand, Manchester City has featured in the last three editions but has suffered defeat on each occasion.

Despite having the talented Erling Haaland in their attack, Manchester City opted to leave Kevin de Bruyne and Ederson Moraes on the bench, while Arsenal started their big-money summer signings, including Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and Jurrien Timber.

During the first half, Mikel Arteta’s Gunners displayed superiority, creating clear-cut chances through Kai Havertz, but unfortunately failing to convert them into goals.

In the 77th minute, Manchester City found their breakthrough when Cole Palmer skillfully danced towards the penalty area and fired a curling shot into the top corner of the net.

With 11 minutes of added time, Arsenal showed resilience and managed to level the score through Leandro Trossard, whose shot deflected off a defender and found its way into the net.

The match eventually proceeded to a penalty shootout, where Manchester City faltered as Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri missed their spot-kicks, while Arsenal confidently converted all four of their penalties.

The Community Shield serves as an exciting precursor to the upcoming EPL season, with Manchester City commencing their title defense against Burnley in the following weekend, while Arsenal will host Nottingham Forest, featuring the talented Taiwo Awoniyi.
