Mansfield, England — Arsenal Football Club of London survived a tense Football Association Challenge Cup (FA Cup) tie against Mansfield Town Football Club to secure a 2–1 victory and advance to the quarter-finals of England’s oldest domestic football competition.

The match, played at One Call Stadium in Mansfield, central England, saw the English Premier League leaders tested by the third-tier side before eventually holding on for the win.

Arsenal, commonly known as the Gunners, remain in pursuit of an extraordinary four-trophy season across domestic and European competitions. The club currently leads the English Premier League table and is still competing in the FA Cup, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League, and the English Football League Cup.

Okay News reports that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, the Spanish former professional footballer who has managed the London club since 2019, made nine changes to the starting lineup from the team that defeated Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club 1–0 earlier in the week in the Premier League. That league victory widened Arsenal’s advantage at the top of England’s top-flight division to seven points.

Despite dominating possession in the early stages of the FA Cup encounter, Arsenal faced a determined challenge from Mansfield Town, a club currently competing in England’s third-tier professional league.

The home side had already demonstrated their ability to surprise stronger opponents after eliminating Burnley Football Club, a Premier League team, in the previous round of the tournament.

Mansfield began to grow into the game after the opening minutes and created several chances. Forward Rhys Oates frequently threatened Arsenal’s defence, while midfielder Tyler Roberts came close with a long-range attempt that went narrowly wide.

Arsenal eventually broke the deadlock in the 41st minute through winger Noni Madueke. The goal came after Mansfield goalkeeper Liam Roberts initially saved Madueke’s first effort. Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli recovered the ball on the left side of the penalty area and returned it to Madueke near the edge of the box.

Madueke then curled a left-footed shot past Roberts to give Arsenal the lead. The goal also marked a milestone for the London club, making Arsenal the first Premier League side to score 100 goals across all competitions during the current season.

Mansfield responded quickly after the restart. Substitute striker Will Evans capitalised on a misplaced pass from Arsenal’s teenage defender Marli Salmon and calmly finished past Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to level the match.

The equaliser sparked an entertaining period in which both teams created further opportunities.

Arsenal regained control in the 66th minute when substitute midfielder Eberechi Eze struck from the edge of the penalty area to restore the visitors’ advantage.

The London side remained under pressure during the closing stages, as Mansfield continued to push for another equaliser. However, Arsenal managed to maintain their lead until the final whistle to secure their place in the last eight of the competition.

The match also featured a notable milestone for the club’s youth system. Max Dowman became Arsenal’s youngest-ever FA Cup player after starting the match at the age of 16 years and 66 days. Fellow 16-year-old Marli Salmon was also included in the starting lineup as Arteta rotated his squad.

Arsenal’s most recent FA Cup triumph came in 2020 during Arteta’s first season in charge. That victory remains the Spanish coach’s only major trophy with the club so far.

This season, however, Arsenal appears well positioned to challenge for multiple honours. The club is currently seven points ahead of defending champions Manchester City Football Club in the Premier League with eight matches remaining.

The London team also faces German champions Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. In addition, Arsenal will contest the English Football League Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, March 22, 2026.
