ISTANBUL, Turkey – Aston Villa have ended their 44-year wait for a major European trophy after defeating German side SC Freiburg 3-0 in the UEFA Europa League final at the Tüpraş Stadyumu.
Okay News reports that the historic victory on Wednesday night, marks the club’s first silverware since winning the League Cup in 1996 and their biggest continental triumph since lifting the European Cup in 1982. The win also cements manager Unai Emery’s status as the undisputed king of the competition, securing his record-breaking fifth Europa League title.
After a cagey opening, Villa broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when Youri Tielemans latched onto a pass from Morgan Rogers to fire home a brilliant volley. The English side doubled their advantage deep into first-half stoppage time as Emi Buendía unleashed a stunning strike past the Freiburg goalkeeper following a clever setup by captain John McGinn. Freiburg attempted to fight back after the interval, but Villa remained structured and put the game completely out of reach in the 58th minute when Morgan Rogers capped off a fine individual performance by slotting home a third goal assisted by Buendía.
Freiburg’s traveling fans continued to wave flags and sing behind the goal, but their players could not pierce Villa’s defense, with goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez making a sharp diving save late on to protect his clean sheet. In the final minutes, Emery brought on Tyrone Mings and Douglas Luiz to close out the match, sparking wild celebrations among the traveling faithful in Istanbul as the final whistle confirmed Aston Villa as the 2025–26 Europa League champions.
