Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar recently held a significant meeting with Tunde Onakoya, a celebrated Nigerian chess master and the visionary founder of Chess in Slums Africa. Onakoya, who recently earned a Guinness World Record for playing chess continuously for 64 hours, shared insights into his decade-long mission to use chess as a tool for social transformation.

The record-breaking feat took place in New York City’s iconic Times Square from April 17 to April 20, 2025, where Onakoya played alongside American chess player Shawn Martinez. This remarkable achievement brought international attention to his work.

Atiku expressed admiration for Onakoya’s dedication and achievements in a post on X, stating, “I had a great time meeting with Tunde Onakoya, @Tunde_OD. He shared with me the inspiring journey he’s been on for the past ten years, using chess as a powerful tool to transform the lives of children in slum communities.”

He further highlighted how Onakoya’s initiative has helped many children escape poverty by gaining admission into both local and international schools. “Through his work, he’s helped many of them out of the slums and into local and international schools, using the game not just to teach, but to build critical thinking and open doors,” Atiku said.

The former Vice President also recounted Onakoya’s passionate vision to establish the world’s largest chess institute, quoting him: “Talent is universal, but opportunity is not.” Atiku pledged his support to help realize this dream.

Adding a personal touch to the meeting, Atiku praised a chessboard gifted by Onakoya, which was intricately designed with traditional ‘Adire’ patterns, calling it a “work of art.” Onakoya also extended an invitation to Atiku for his upcoming birthday celebration later this year.
