Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing it as a setback for affirmative action and an attempt to silence women in leadership.

Atiku’s statement, released on International Women’s Day 2025, criticized Nigerian leaders for failing to create an enabling environment for women to thrive in governance and national development.

“Women must be encouraged and empowered to participate fully in governance, not silenced when they take leadership roles,” Atiku declared.

The former vice president argued that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension weakens gender representation, fairness, and inclusivity in governance, at a time when women’s voices should be amplified rather than stifled.

He also commended Nigerian women for their resilience, hard work, and courage, describing them as the backbone of society.

“On this International Women’s Day 2025, I reaffirm my commitment to advancing, including, and protecting women’s rights in Nigeria.

“A nation can only progress when its women are given the space and opportunity to thrive,” he added.
