LAGOS, Nigeria – Nigeria’s former vice president and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, congratulated the Morocco national football team on Sunday, July 5, 2026, for qualifying for the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Okay News reports that Abubakar published a statement on the social media platform X following the team’s 3-0 victory over Canada.
Abubakar said, “Congratulations to Morocco on a deserved 3-0 victory over Canada and on becoming the first African team to reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”
He said, “You have once again lifted the hopes of an entire continent and reminded the world that African football belongs on the biggest stage.”
The tournament is jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
During the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Morocco became the first African and Arab nation to reach the semi-finals of the tournament.
