Abuja, NIGERIA — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar met with the Coalition for Democracy Movement (CDM) on Tuesday, in a bid to discuss strategic measures for protecting the integrity of the 2027 general elections.
The delegation, led by Dr. Jibril Shehu Mustapha, outlined a nationwide structure aimed at mobilizing voters and safeguarding the electoral process.
During the meeting, Atiku expressed deep-seated concerns regarding election manipulation, with a specific focus on vulnerabilities at collation centres.
Okay News reports that the former Vice President stressed the urgent need for “effective countermeasures” to ensure that the will of the people is not subverted during the final stages of vote counting. He commended the coalition for its consistency and for offering a “credible move” toward transparent governance.
Dr. Jibril Shehu Mustapha, a prominent academic and advocate known for his research on election fraud and institutional corruption, assured the PDP chieftain of the coalition’s commitment to voter protection. Atiku, in turn, expressed his gratitude for their sacrifices, stating that “history will remember their role in defending democracy” as the country navigates an increasingly complex political landscape.
The meeting comes as the opposition coalition—which now includes figures from the ADC and the Obidient Movement—continues to unify its front against the ruling APC. Atiku’s emphasis on collation centre security follows long-standing criticisms of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the real-time transmission of results, an issue that remained at the forefront of the 2023 legal battles.
