ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate.
Lawal announced his decision on Monday, alleging that the party’s presidential primary process was manipulated in favour of Atiku. He claimed the outcome had been predetermined and said he could no longer remain a member of the party under the current circumstances.
Okay News reports that the former SGF stated that he would not be part of what he described as Atiku’s “rigging machine” ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He further argued that President Bola Tinubu would be a better option than the former vice president.
Lawal also criticised Atiku’s suitability for the presidency, accusing him of incompetence and describing him as a tribal and religious bigot. He maintained that such qualities should disqualify anyone from occupying Nigeria’s highest political office.
His resignation marks a fresh development within opposition politics as political parties continue preparations for the 2027 general election.
