ABUJA, Nigeria: Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, met with the former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, at his residence in Abuja on Thursday, May 28, 2026, to discuss national economic and security challenges.
Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, disclosed the details of the meeting in a post on his X handle on Thursday, May 28, 2026. Okay News reports that Atiku Abubakar stated the discussions centered on the economic and security challenges of the country and the need for national solutions.
“Beyond the warmth and camaraderie, we had deep and honest conversations about the troubling state of our nation, the growing economic pain, insecurity, and the urgent responsibility on patriotic Nigerians to continue engaging in the search for solutions that can rescue our country from drift and despair,” Atiku Abubakar said.
During the visit, Atiku Abubakar also congratulated Rotimi Amaechi on his birthday, which occurred on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. Atiku Abubakar said, “I also felicitated with him on the occasion of his birthday yesterday and teased that Arsenal’s historic triumph could not have arrived at a better time.” He further noted, “In true Rivers hospitality, he apologised for not having enough time to prepare Fisherman Soup, a delicacy I have now been promised on our return for the second leg.”
The meeting followed the African Democratic Congress presidential primary election held on Wednesday night at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, where Atiku Abubakar emerged as the party’s candidate for the 2027 general election. Official figures released by the party leadership, led by former Senate President David Mark, showed that Atiku Abubakar polled 1,846,370 votes, while Rotimi Amaechi secured 504,117 votes and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen received 177,120 votes.
Following the declaration of the results, Atiku Abubakar appealed to Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen to work with him ahead of the general election. Both Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen rejected the outcome of the primary election, alleging irregularities in the voting process.
