Auchi Polytechnic Lecturers Begins Indefinite Strike

Academic activities at the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo, were on Monday paralysed after members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic went on an indefinite strike over the nonpayment salaries.

A correspondent of News Agency of Nigeria, who visited the school premises, reported that the lecture halls and offices were locked.

The polytechnic’s secondary school was also affected as teachers and students were asked to stay at home.

The Chairman of the Auchi Branch of ASUP, Mr. Abdulazeez Isah, said the strike, which commenced on Monday, would be indefinite until the management paid their outstanding two months’ salaries.

“We are on indefinite strike because the polytechnic management has refused to pay us our December and January salaries,” he said.

“Lecturers have to stay away from work because the nonpayment of their salaries has made life difficult for them.”

Isah said his members had resolved that they would not return to the classrooms until the outstanding salaries were paid.
