Armed bandits have killed and abducted several travellers along the Mayanchi–Anka road in Zamfara State during an attack on Friday evening.

Witnesses said the heavily armed attackers blocked the busy road and opened fire on vehicles before seizing passengers and fleeing into nearby bushes.

A motorist who narrowly escaped, Malam Muhammad Ahmad, said many travellers were taken away while others managed to hide in farmlands.

“The bandits blocked us on the road and kidnapped many people. Some of us ran into the bushes where crops were planted. My colleague, Abubakar Lawali Sardauna, was killed because he refused to be abducted,” Ahmad said.

Residents reported that security operatives arrived after the bandits had retreated with their captives. The total number of those killed or kidnapped could not be confirmed at the time of filing this report.

Efforts to reach Zamfara Police spokesman, DSP Yazid Abubakar, were unsuccessful.

The attack adds to a series of violent incidents in Zamfara, a state that has struggled with persistent banditry, kidnappings, and attacks on communities despite ongoing military operations in the North West.
