KADUNA, Nigeria – Armed gangs killed at least nine farmers and kidnapped several others during a raid on Kakangi village in the Birnin Gwari district of Nigeria’s Kaduna State on Saturday.
Okay News reports that a security report prepared for the United Nations detailed the attack on the agricultural community.
The report, reviewed by Agence France-Presse on Sunday, stated that attackers swept into farmlands outside the village and shot farmers as they worked on their fields.
“Nine bodies have been recovered so far, with six of the victims identified by local authorities,” the report said.
A community leader in Birnin Gwari, Kabiru Ishaq, said 10 people died in the incident. Ishaq said the attack was retaliation for the killing of an armed gang member by farmers during an attempted robbery earlier on Saturday.
The security report cited the same motive for the violence. The report said the accomplice of the deceased gang member “returned with reinforcements and launched a retaliatory assault”.
The incident follows an attack last month in the same district where armed individuals killed at least six farmers and kidnapped 20 others in Danauta village.
