Barcelona Extend La Liga Lead After Derby Win Over Espanyol

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

Spotify Camp Nou Stadium, Barcelona, Spain – Barcelona have moved nine points clear of rivals Real Madrid at the top of La Liga following a clinical 4-1 victory over Espanyol in the Catalan derby on Saturday, April 11, 2026.

Okay News reports that the night belonged to 18-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal, who became the youngest player in the club’s history to reach 100 appearances. Yamal celebrated the milestone in style, providing two assists for Ferran Torres in the first half before scoring himself in the 87th minute.

Ferran Torres opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a header from a Yamal corner and doubled the lead in the 25th minute. Although Espanyol’s Pol Lozano pulled one back in the 56th minute, Barcelona finished strongly. Following Yamal’s late strike, England forward Marcus Rashford came off the bench to seal the win with an 89th-minute volley.

With only seven games remaining in the season, Hansi Flick’s side is now firmly on course to retain the league title. The team will now shift its focus to a crucial Champions League second-leg tie against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, where they must overturn a two-goal deficit to stay in the competition. For Espanyol, the loss extends their winless run to 14 matches, though they remain 10th in the table.
