Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, has removed the chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), Dr John Chem, following a recommendation by the state House of Assembly. The Assembly accused Dr Chem of poor judgment and actions that fell short of public interest.

The governor accepted the resolution and directed Dr Chem to hand over to the administrative secretary of the commission. This decision comes after the Assembly criticized Dr Chem’s leadership, citing a lack of good judgment in making decisions that appeal to the greater majority of stakeholders.

The removal of the SIEC chairman is a significant development in Benue State’s political landscape, and it remains to be seen how this will impact the state’s electoral processes.
